a walk in the rain

The sky was gray when I set out this morning with plans to walk along the coast. By the time I reached Fort Foster (in Kittery Point, Maine) a light rain was falling.

With temperatures in the mid-60s, it was a good morning for a walk in the rain.

a day on Cape Cod

My mom and sister spent the better part of this week in Provincetown. I joined them for a day, walking in town, then in the very special Cape Cod National Seashore.

I liked the quote on the National Park Services entry page for this beautiful National Seashore:

"A man may stand there and put all America behind him."
Henry David Thoreau

The great Outer Beach described by Thoreau in the 1800s is protected within the national seashore. Forty miles of pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support diverse species. Lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs offer a glimpse of Cape Cod's past and continuing ways of life.

We spent most of our beach walking time at Head of the Meadow Beaches in North Truro. There was a visible sand bar protecting the gray seals that were bobbing in the water. As we watched the seals climbed onto the sand bar. I wonder if the seals realized that a shark warning sign was flying on the beach.

There were areas of beach closed for the piping plover and least tern nesting season. In some places the closures were close to the grass-covered sand dunes; in others they extended to the high tide line.

a greeter

This resident of Commercial Street in Provincetown brought a smile to my face every time I walked past "him". A half-door kept strangers out of the house while the puppet guarded the entrance.

stacked

I'm fascinated by this plant formed of tiny flowers formed in balls, leaves hanging, stacked in a line. I need to find its name!

a happy bee

An early evening walk in the gardens of Stevens-Coolidge Place provided a feast of color for my eyes.

Bees were attracted to the nectar of this very purple globe thistle.
